We did not stop at the donut shop. We did stop at the gas station. Gas was up. Gas is up. (more on this later.) The van's tank took over $100 worth of gas so the meter goes up to $99.95 then you have to start all over again to finish filling the tank. Arco charges 45 cents for each ATM transaction. The drive is done in pitch black through the winter but as summer approaches the drive is done in twilight. Two weeks ago, bugs pelted the van and created many, many wet splotches across the windshield. This is one of the first signs of the spring summer continuum.
We got there "on time." Let me explain "on time." Flea market geeks like Dennis and Bryan are commited to arriving at the market when the gate opens for customers. That's when the treasures are to be found and the vendors have not been picked over....well, it was quiet with no line of cars at the gate.
Dennis' only purchase was a plastic Viking hat for 50 cents.
He cut away most of it to retain a plastic strip connecting the horns. This for Yogi to wear.
See pictures. I got a coconut macaroon in a pink plastic bag like the ones that Chinese restaurants use for carry-out. When this vendor does set up, they are in the same place along the parking lot side of the "commercial" section. Dennis and Bryan call it commercial because there are more little businesses on that side, selling toys, produce, bakery. etc. The coconut macaroon vendor is a pasteria and sells Hispanic sweets that have coconut or peanuts as a base. The macaroons are bright yellow. The bottom edges and stray curls of coconut are very brown or burned. They sell them anyway. I've stuck my nose up at this vendor. In fairness to myself, I am usually willing to and want to try just about anything.
I made some crack about it to Kitty. She sighed saying, "mygod the macaroons... are rich." so I got one along with a bag of very fresh, roasted and unsalted peanuts, a bar of peanut-sesame brittle. There is something about Mexican sweets that are so rough-hewn as though they are made in a little kitchen factory over an open fire. It was good.
